The spider (along with the lovejoys) is what holds the motor and pump together. Both the motor and pump have an attached shaft. These shafts are connected through the two lovejoys and spider. When the motor turns, the shaft on the motor turns, which turns the lovejoys and spider and the shaft on the pump. The shaft on the pump then turns the vanes inside the pump.
